Rise in business school applications prompts scramblefor cream of the MBA crop
London, April 2009: Pressure on top international business schools to identify quality candidates among rapidly growing numbers of MBA applicants has created extra demand for MBA recruitment events with a focus on pre-selection.Leading business schools including HEC, Duke, IE, Ashridge, Manchester and Warwick will attend an invite-only QS TopMBA Connect event in London next month. Organized by QS, this extra London date for the prestigious QS TopMBA Connect Tour is responding to the need to identify leading MBA candidates for the last few spaces of the 2009 intake. Now in its third year, Connect gives high-performing MBA applicants a free and exclusive opportunity for an in-depth, one-to-one dialogue with experts from their preferred business schools. Scheduled, half-hour interviews with admissions officers provide a unique opportunity for candidates and schools to identify the right fit.
Hundreds of candidates have found the right MBA program for them at QS Connect events, including Hadric Khanu, who has accepted a place at Chicago Booth: “Thanks to TopMBA Connect, I found the college that was the exact fit for me!” and Patrick Von-Planta, who found that Connect really helped him progress: “I read through the official rankings and ordered the brochures from business schools. However, meeting the schools at the event helped me to reassure my final decision. At this event you – the candidate – are the centre. The selection process makes you feel that the application process has already started – that’s a good sign!”
The latest report by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) highlighted an 11% rise in those interested in pursuing an MBA over the last 18 months, with a record number of GMAT exams registered in 2008. This reflects the application spike in MBA candidates associated with an economic downturn.  It is increasingly difficult for business schools to identify the best candidates within this rapidly growing pool and QS Connect events provide the ideal solution to this problem for both parties.
Nunzio Quaquarelli, managing director of QS says, “While websites such as topmba.com and QS World MBA fairs have clear uses for groundwork and research, there’s no substitute for talking face to face with admissions directors who know their business school inside out. QS TopMBA Connect is the only pre-scheduled MBA interview event available and it works. The event expands year on year and, due to its success, QS is considering a number of new cities for Connect events next year.”
