A new generation of engineers

Leading motorsport and automotive technology specialist, Prodrive, is supporting Greenpower to promote engineering to young people across the UK.   Through its electric car challenge, Greenpower has already inspired thousands of youngsters to view engineering in a new light.  Over the past nine years more than 100 events have been organised where competitors race full scale electric cars, which they have designed and built themselves.

David Richards, Chairman of Prodrive and Aston Martin, has become a patron of Greenpower.  He joins the Earl of March who has been a patron for the past five years, helping Greenpower to secure essential funding for its programme.  Richards said: “After attending the Greenpower national finals at Goodwood in October last year, I was not only impressed by the superbly engineered cars, but also by the focus, passion and great teamwork I witnessed among the young competitors, who had designed and built the very cars they were racing.   At Prodrive we constantly look for talented engineers with precisely this level of drive and commitment, so I wholeheartedly support Greenpower’s aim of encouraging even more young people to consider engineering as a future career.”

Prodrive will also be sponsoring a new “Marketing Award” for the Greenpower challenge.  Grahame Wright, marketing director of Prodrive explains: “Just as engineering is an essential component of a successful racing organisation, so too is marketing.  By sponsoring this new award, we want to encourage Greenpower participants to discover for themselves how marketing and engineering are, in fact, just different sides of the same coin.”  The winners will be invited to a VIP day at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury where they will have an opportunity to learn more about engineering and marketing in motorsport, through a tour of the Subaru World Rally Team and Aston Martin Racing.

Barry Shears, founder of Greenpower said: “Prodrive’s support of Greenpower will make the racing experience for the teams involved far more authentic.  Having a company with such an illustrious racing history endorses all the effort put into building and racing the Greenpower electric cars.  It will inspire each and every competitor during the project and provide a genuine sense of achievement.”
